At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
